Did you know that Utrecht was founded by two brothers, Norman and Harold Gulamerian, from Brooklyn in 1949? Since their early beginnings, Utrecht has become famous for selling high quality art supplies from leading art manufacturers around the world. Their story is somewhat similar to mine. Norman, who was also an artist, started to import fine artists’ linen through his brother, Harold, because he was unable to find the quality he wanted in the States. Shortly thereafter, they decided to form a business in order to help other artists also benefit from his European art connection. When the company was first founded, the brothers named it Utrecht Linens, Inc.
In my case, while earning my undergraduate degree at Tyler School of Art, I got the idea to make up art kits from my fellow students, after being given extensive art supply lists from my professors. If you have attended Art College, you know that professors are rather particular in the brands that they want their students to use, which can run into hundreds of dollars. My idea was to buy from wholesalers and pass on my savings to other students. So, with a bit of persistence, I went into the art supply business!
